Formerly the colony of British Honduras, Belize is the only country in Central America without a coastline on the Pacific Ocean and the only one in the region with English as its official language. The country is located between Guatemala to the west and south and Mexico to the north.
It is one of the greatest bonefish and permit destinations in the world with some the best lodges and guides you could ever hope to fish with. Though the bones are not as large as found in the Bahamas or Cuba there are lots of them and it makes and excellent destination for those starting out or looking for a Grand Slam.
The DIY opportunities are not as great (or explored) as some of the other Caribbean countries but they do exist on Ambergris Cay and areas south toward Placencia.
